One of the learning tasks I’ve taken on in 2014 is learning to blog. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? Well, shut my mouth, it is NOT easy. I attended a class to day, Introduction to Blogging, and understood about 20% of what the instructor presented. Wanted to get up and run, but…we all know continuous learning is very important, so I stuck it out. Maybe next week’s class will fill in some of the big holes. In the meantime, I’ll keep trying to stay in touch.
The Roundtable in Richmond, KY was a huge success–thanks to Carol and Sonia and the sponsors. In her talk, Governor Collins shared several tips for women leaders in the workplace. One was to create conditions where your staff or employees consider your ideas theirs. Now, this is tricky stuff and you can’t just lurch into it. First, it’s about communication and whether you can create an environment where others’ opinions are valued, where teamwork is part of the culture. If you can’t or won’t do this, communication remains one-way, or, at best, two-way. In a more open communication, where ideas are shared, assessed and implemented, you will see that your original idea isn’t exactly the same anymore. Others have added value, removed some of the negative aspects of the information or implementation and the idea is, in fact, owned by the group. If you’re the leader of the group and the group does well, you’ll get your share of credit. Don’t let ego stand in the way of good communication and good practice. Try it. Let me know how it goes.
